Well, if we're going to blog, let's blog. How did everyone in the class spend their Halloweens?
I just got back from Salem, where the best word to describe the situation would be "madhouse". There was a festival going on in the streets -- the roads were blocked off, people of every age and size were crammed into costumes of all descriptions, there was drinking, shouting, music blaring from several DJs, and -- no joke -- a Ferris wheel down by the docks.
I opted for something a little quieter, though -- a "Haunted Footsteps" walking tour of the city, led by a woman with a lantern who told spooky stories about the ghosts that haunt some of the older and more run-down buildings. The tour took us away from the party for the most part, which was a good thing, but I wish I had made time to go on it this past weekend, when there weren't drunken costumed revelers on every corner. It would have been much spookier with just the crowd, the lantern, and the darkness...
She told some great stories, including the one about the ghost of the police captain who put the "witches" to death back in 1692, a little girl who died in a fire almost 200 years ago but still searches for her mother, the ghost that tried to tell Nathaniel Hawthorne something five days in a row, the bodies that were discovered underneath Salem's abandoned prison in 1992, and the Curse of Giles Corey. It was a bit on the historical side, but good stuff nonetheless.
On the way out of town I saw the riot police marching up the street in formation, just letting the town know who was boss. Yikes.
Now I'm going to go curl up and watch some of my favorite Simpsons Halloween Specials. Hope everyone else had a great night -- I can't wait to hear your stories of mischief and hauntings!

Well... this raises the question about what this blog's purpose is. We don't have a tagline yet, and before we get the ideas for tagline, we need to figure out what we're trying to summarize anyway.
I think of this blog not just as part of class, but as a growing resource for web writing/editing or things related to topics that come up in class. It threw me off to find a personal post unrelated to class topic, not because there's anything wrong with it in and of itself, but because I don't expect to see that kind of write-up here. That's just my current viewpoint, though. Maybe there's also good reason to use this venue to get to know each other, and we'll figure out the balance as we go along.
Charles, I'm not sure what the heck you just said, but I think you were defending my post. So, er, thanks?
My understanding of this blog is that it's for members of the class to write things in. That's it. If we find anything related TO the class, we're ENCOURAGED to post it here (rather than, say, e-mailing it to the professor), but I never got the impression that our content was restricted ONLY to that material.
I have a few ideas for class-related content that I'll post when they finish forming in my head. But for now, well, I've never used or operated a blog before -- and since this class is about learning how to use the web, I figured I would do so ... test the waters with some conversational posts and see if I could get the hang of talking about my life to a large and varied audience.
You know, like the recent class speaker did with HER blog.
Sorry if any feathers were ruffled, but I think "using the blog to strike up a conversation with the other class members" is a valid topic -- no matter WHAT the conversation is about.
So what DID everyone do with their Halloween?
Hmm...interesting view points.
I think whatever we put on this blog is already related to our class, because we ARE editing and writing for the web.
For blog newbies like myself writing on this blog is already a learning experience in itself.
I just remembered a hillarious story on NPR this morning (while sitting in the car, waiting for the gym to open because I forgot about the time change - talk about an extra hour of sleep waisted).
Apparently this NPR story is becoming popular amongst bloggers:
If you want a cat and your partner wants a dog, what do you do? Get a CHICKEN:

By the way Jeph, I had an awesome Halloween party at my place.
